The Power of Momentum

When dealing with grief and loss; such as losing a loved one, losing a job, failing health, depression, anxiety, and even just plain fear of dealing with today’s worries; One of the most important ways to support you and your mental and emotional well-being is to keep your momentum going. Sure, you might have to stop and catch your breath once in a while, however, it’s important to continue taking steps of courage in a forward motion, just like a clock, one step at a time. In other words, one of the secrets in gaining momentum is to 1. Get up. 2. Take two steps forward.

One example I like to often share when discussing the power of momentum is getting up in the morning. However, I’d like to pause for a moment and look back before I even get up. When looking back on an average day, especially if I’ve been working from home or laid off of work and having a hard time dealing with depression or anxiety, how have the other days in getting your day started been working out? If you’re feeling stuck and unmotivated then it might be time to try out some new ideas. For example, before you go to bed at night, drink lots of water. Needless to say, beyond just the incredible positive effects of H2O in your body, you WILL have to get up at some point in the morning to go to the washroom. You will literally have to get up and take 2 steps forward. At this point, maybe you can consider taking another step such as washing your hands. Well, if you’ve washed your hands, why not try splashing a little bit of cold water onto your face. At this point you might as well take even another step and fix your hair. You probably get the idea by now. At this point you might as well get dressed, eat, brush your teeth and get your day going. That’s just a small example of one possible way to get momentum going in your day-to-day activities.

Please keep in mind that if you or a family member is still having difficulty in getting up and taking 2 steps forward, I would like you to consider taking one of those steps towards your phone, or computer, and consider contacting a qualified counselling therapist in order to begin finding ways to take more than just 2 steps forward and, like a clock, find the motivation to “keep going.”
