How To Get The Wind Back In The Sails of Your Marriage | Marriage Counselling Calgary

I’d like to share a personal story, so bear with me as I get a little bit detailed with it and I promise at the end there will be an important learning point in sharing this story in reference to Marriage Counselling Calgary and getting the wind back in the sails of your marriage.

When I was a young adult, I worked as a camp counsellor and as an assistant recreation director. I admit, these were pretty fancy job titles under the guise of having an awesome summer or fun.

One of the cool opportunities I had at the camp I was working at was to learn and teach kids how to sail, which in my spare time allowed myself and a friend of mine, who was built like a solid rock, to go sailing and navigate our way into fun.

The challenge in Sailing was if there was no wind there was no speed or movement, however, if it was a windy day the sail allowed us to go super-fast and we would get into a sailing position called “hiking”

One day, while we were going superfast and hiking, the windy day suddenly turned extremely stormy and suddenly without warning, a combination of wind shifting and a line holding the sail broke and we went flying out of the mini sailboat and our sail boat flipped outside down and literally got stuck in a low point of the lake we were in and the tip of the mast got stuck upside down in the sand preventing us from turning the sailboat right-side up again. Now the weather was getting worse and, in that moment, we realized that neither of us told anyone we’d be out in the lake, so we were stuck in increasing colder water and no one to rescue us.

Thankfully, there were a few staff on-site as this was also a weekend in-between camps where most staff were away. In looking for us they realized we were missing and knowing where we probably were saw us stuck out in the middle of the lake and rescued us doing their best not to laugh at the upside down sail boat and our chilled blue lips.

Now the point of this story is not to self-therapize myself, although thank you for taking time to read this story if you’ve made it this far. My point is that marriage and intimate relationships are metaphorically like how my old buddy and I got totally stuck in the middle of nowhere. You see, in relationships, we can be going nowhere when there is no wind or momentum to carry us forward or we can end up in a sweet spot in our relationships thinking were going full speed, having fun and nothing can stop us, when all of a sudden kablam…me and my loved one are stuck in the middle of nowhere with no support or way to get out of a difficult crisis that might rock the relationship.

I’m so glad someone cared enough to check in on 2 carefree young adults and maybe there is someone in your relationship or friend group who is checking in on you and wondering if it might be time to consider marriage counselling Calgary and seek a qualified clinical counsellor who can help you and your partner to get you out of the freezing water and get your sailboat/marriage unstuck and begin to walk, or in this case, continue to sail into New Life.
